Literacy Matters……….Dennis Bayley

The fund-raising walk to fund literacy projects continues and to date over $1700 has been raised, including two very generous donations from residents of Canterbury Common.

Our cheque for $1000 was presented on Dec. 5th to the First Nations Literacy Partnership project, and similar contributions were made by Pickering and Whitby clubs . A district matching grant for this project has been obtained.  The annual distribution of dictionaries to Grade 4 students in Scugog is underway .The early childhood program organized by Rose of Durham will be supported once more thanks to a contribution from former exchange student Marie which has been matched by Bob Strickert.

At the District level a draft of new criteria for the district literacy award has been written by Dennis Bayley and submitted to the District literacy chair . A District literacy conference is being planned for late spring and the likely location is Port Perry.
