Literacy Matters

‘Basic education and literacy is a priority in our Rotary service ’. This quotation is from the message of the Rotary International President Ron. D. Burton, and ironically follows a recent announcement that the Rotary District awards will not be made this year. Our literacy program, which would have once again made the club eligible for this award, is going well, with the CAL pilot project nearing successful completion, the annual dictionary distribution having been made, the First Nations Literacy Pilot Program well underway and literacy speakers lined up for literacy month. Literacy improvement in Canada is important because an overall improvement in literacy of 1% would yield an increase in GDP of 32 Billion Dollars per annum. LITERACY MATTERS.
