Community Projects

Annual Spring Gala

The Rotary Spring Gala is the club's major fundraising event. In recent years, this Gala has been held at The Royal Ashburn Golf Club. In April of 2015, the evening raised over $47,000.

All funds go directly into supporting local and international projects, including Rotary International's campaign to eradicate polio worldwide.

Raffles, a silent auction and a live auction are the highlight of the evening, along with great food and fellowship.

The atmosphere of the Royal Ashburn offers a very professional yet social setting for the event and the relaxed format lends itself to a fun filled evening for everyone.

Earth Week Clean-Up

Every year, the Rotary Club of Port Perry heads out to the Rotary Boardwalk and cleans up all the debris left over from the winter months.
This project is not for the faint of heart, and is not a glorious job by any means, but helps to create a environment for the community of Port Perry to enjoy during the Spring and Summer months.

Camp Scugog Project

Over two sunny Saturdays in late Spring, over a dozen Port Perry Rotarians descended on the United Church's Lake Scugog Camp to repair and prep a counsellor's cabin for yet another camping season.

Roof shingles were removed and new ones nailed down, two fresh coats of stain were applied to exterior walls, a new painted plywood floor was installed along with IKEA shelving .... and the rotted front door replaced with a cedar entrance.

The project was completed with the installation of a new front porch with seating for two.

The camp is located on St. Christopher's Road, just east of Nestleton on the south shore of Lake Scugog. Owned and operated for over 80 years by the United Church, this camp welcomes deserving kids, and their families, for a 7 to 10 day respite from inner city challenges.

For all Rotarians involved, this was a chance to either prove they had ample renovation skills ....... or that they could rise, once again, to meet a worthy challenge with new ones.

Congratulations to one and all.

Senior's Dinner

The Seniors’ Dinner was the first community service project of the Rotary Club of Port Perry in the year 1981, the year of our charter. But this was not just a Rotary project. In fact this was a joint project of the Rotary Club of Port Perry and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419.

The first dinner fed about 50 seniors from the Port Perry area. The dinner was held at the local Legion branch and the meal was totally prepared by Rotarian Ken Jackson and Legion Auxiliary member Therese Hlozan.

The Seniors’ Dinner was an instant hit and grew year after year. It was held at the Legion for only a few years until the size of the dinner exceeded the Legion’s capacity. It then moved to the Catholic Church Hall. When this move was made, the project became solely a Rotary project.

The dinner has moved a couple of times over the years to it’s present venue, at the Scugog Community Centre, where over 230 seniors and volunteers receive a wonderful Christmas dinner year.

Legs for Literacy

To raise funds for many literacy projects several Rotarians and friends are cycling , running and walking for the cause. For example, Bob Almack and his wife cycled from Winnipeg to Tobermoray, a distance in excess of 1,800 kilometres. Dennis Bayley will shortly be completing three thousand miles walking on a treadmill.
Ken Graham has completed three 10k runs and there is more to come, and Kyra Graham and Line Nielsen have each run 10k to support literacy projects of Port Perry Rotary Club such as the dictionary, 1st Nations literacy, intergenerational, and literacy workshop projects. Pledges in support of Legs for Literacy of $20 or more will get tax receipts. To register online simply click here. Scugog Santa Claus Parade

Every December, the Rotary Club of Port Perry participates in the Santa Claus Parade by entering a float and providing endless joy to all the children who come out to participate in the parade and experience the magic of Christmas!
